While the event's name “Let Loose” offers little information about the details of the ads, the accompanying artwork of a hand holding an Apple Pencil strongly suggests that the event will focus primarily on iPads.
The latest rumors in late March talked about the imminent release of Apple's new iPads, accompanied by key details. The star of the event is expected to be a pair of new iPad Pros, which will include the M3 SoC, have OLED displays, slightly larger screens and subtle design changes. Apple's flagship tablets will likely come with an updated 10.9-inch iPad Air with an M2 chip and an all-new 12.9-inch Air, offering iPad fans a less expensive alternative to the larger-screen iPad Pro.
In addition to the new iPads, reports indicate that Apple will also introduce updated Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard accessories. While there is the potential to upgrade to other iPads in Apple's lineup, such as the 9th generation iPad, iPad mini, and 10th generation iPad, current rumors indicate that this particular event will primarily focus on the high-end models.
Spring product events are not unusual for Apple, although they are usually held in March or April. The May event comes just one month before Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, where the company is expected to unveil the next versions of its operating systems, with a focus on features based on creative AI. In March, Apple announced a new MacBook Air through a press release without holding any special event.
The launch of the new iPads will mark Apple's first tablet launch in more than a year, as the company has not announced a single new iPad throughout 2023, the first time that has happened since the company's original tablet debuted in 2010.
Although iPads are expected to be the main focus of the event, Apple could also use the opportunity to announce products other than the iPad. Desktop Macs like the Mac Mini and Mac Studio are also set to integrate some version of the M3 chipset, though more recent rumors suggest Apple may go straight from the M2 to the M4 specifically for the Mac Mini.
