Open or closed lid tank – experts overturn what we know

And where we thought we had a verdict. Leaving the lid open while rinsing is clearly an unsanitary practice, as the rush of water will cause debris to splash a short distance from the sink.

But a team of experts is once again upending what we knew, in a study we shared with you. New York PostAs the closed lid does not significantly prevent the spread of germs in the home and public places.

Microbial load study

According to a study published Thursday American Journal of Infection ControlThe researchers found that tiny microbial particles spread throughout the toilet after each use, whether the lid was closed or open.

“A lot of people say all you have to do is close the lid and the problem is solved,” said Charles Gerba, lead researcher and microbiologist. “But all the airflow generated by flushing the toilet dissipates and carries germs from the toilet outside.”

Previous research has shown that closing the lid reduces the spread of microbes, but Gerba noted that those studies focused on larger particles. Still, while the study found that closing the lid didn’t reduce overall bathroom contamination, it did change the path of germs..

In conclusion, the researchers stressed that the best way to get rid of germs is to regularly disinfect the water, the walls of the sink, and all surfaces of the toilet. And of course, never neglect washing your hands with soap.
