Nearly 11 years after Reeva Steenkamp’s brutal murder, Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison in January.
“Blade Runner,” the nickname by which Oscar Pistorius has become known, will be released from prison in January, almost 11 years after the brutal murder of his partner Reeva Steenkamp.
The former Paralympian turned international star and convicted murderer shot Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013 at his home in Pretoria, South Africa.
Oscar Pistorius claimed he fired from behind a closed bathroom door, thinking Riva would be a thief.
The 37-year-old will be released on January 5, as it became known from Sky News. The suspension will last until December 5, 2029, and will be subject to conditions until the end of his sentence.
The story of the Oscar Pistorius trial
The trial of Oscar Pistorius was televised and widely publicized around the world, with the civil lawsuit alleging that the murder was premeditated and that he shot his partner and model Reeva Steenkamp after an argument.
Oscar Pistorius was initially found not guilty of murder and was convicted of manslaughter. He was sentenced to five years in prison in 2014 and was eventually released under house arrest.
A year later, his conviction was overturned, with the Supreme Court of Appeal finding him guilty of murder.
He was sentenced to six years in prison, which was later increased to 13 years and five months after he was convicted and his sentence was deemed too lenient.
The parole board heard his case again on Friday after he was denied parole last March.
