Prince Philip is said to have been furious when he discovered his grandson Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plans to step down from royal duties in 2020.
The late Prince Philip is said to have been seething with anger, demanding to know “what the hell games are they playing?”, when he learned of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s shock decision to step back from their roles and responsibilities as senior royals.
In a move that stunned the world in 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their intention to step down as senior members of the royal family and move to North America in pursuit of “financial independence.”
The Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2021, reportedly reacted strongly to the Sussexes’ unexpected announcement, which caused major turmoil within the monarchy.

“Harry is bored, his friends don’t see him because of Meghan’s difficulty,” the royal writer claims.
Prince Philip, 98, is said to have taken his grandson’s actions as an insult to the Queen. According to reports in The Mirror, the Queen is believed to have only been aware of the couple’s plans when she saw them on an iPad before hearing the news.
A palace source claimed that Prince Philip was completely confused and trying to understand the Sussexes’ intentions, adding: “To say the Duke was disappointed would be a gross understatement. He was deeply hurt. But he was furious when his aides told him what had happened. Philip had accused Harry and Meghan of being disrespectful and was fed up with their behaviour.
What Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year, and begin to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” Meghan and Harry said in an Instagram post. “We intend to retire as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
“With your encouragement, particularly in recent years, we feel ready to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the UK and North America while continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth and our patrons.”
“This geographic balance will allow us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.
We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course as we continue to work with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our sincere thanks for your continued support.”
