Rina Komiotis: A marriage of 13 years, the death of her son and her difficult childhood years

At the age of 81, the great singer Rina Komiotis passed away, after serious health problems.

The singer, who passed away in the early hours of Monday (3.4.2023), lived a wealthy life, was married twice, had two children and achieved great success. However, fate was cruel to Rina Komotis who, in the summer of 2022, lost her eldest son, Nikos Savvidis.

She lost her mother when she was a child

Rina Komioti grew up in Drapetsuna, Kokenya. Her mother was from Istanbul and her father was from Izmir. She was only seven months old when her mother died. In one of her rare interviews with Lifo she said: “My parents were refugees. From Nea Ionia, where I was born, we went to Drapetsona and from there to Kokkinia. To this day I feel like the second Piraeus, Kokkiniotissa. My father was a sailor. I lost my mother when he I am seven months old, at the age of 20, with a thyroid complication, which was not treatable at the time.

We were raised by her mother, my grandmother, me the youngest, and my two brothers. Although my father was also very young when we lost my mother he never remarried but we never heard “we saw him there with such and such woman”. He didn’t want for any reason to have a stepmother to raise us. My childhood was quiet and decent—I mean, for all the poverty, we didn’t starve.”

Marriage at the age of 13 and second marriage

When she was just 13 years old – long before she started singing – she married her first husband, Stavros Savvidis. They had a son, Nikos, but their marriage lasted only two years: “The marriage came very early, in 1960, of course before I got involved in singing. My husband and I worked together at Papastratos and in the evenings he went to night high school. I got pregnant and we got married. I had my first son.” , which my grandmother caught and raised for me. This marriage lasted two years – you should know that during the “second” I was spoiling my relationships.

Only my second marriage in America, where I went in 1974 as a singer now, lasted longer. So I broke up after I felt that this man is not for me. I understood that it was neither love nor nonsense. We didn’t stay in touch. Today, even if I saw him on the street, I wouldn’t recognize him. I am interested in my children and grandson.”

She herself did not give interviews and when she was invited to performances she did not go because she avoided publicity. As she herself said, she lived for her children and grandchildren.

In July 2022, her eldest son died, betraying his heart. Reina Komiotis could not attend the funeral because of the serious health problems she was facing.

For the past few months she has been in a nursing home, while for a few weeks her health has begun to fail.
