Tesla announced at its Investor Day 2023 event yesterday that it will be offering a new overnight unlimited home plan for just $30 a month, which is roughly $1 a day.
We usually refer to Tesla as a car company, but we’ve noticed over the years that it’s actually much more than that. Tesla is a technology and software company as well as an energy company.
Tesla’s retail electric division works with owners of the Tesla Powerwall (a Powerwall is a battery that stores energy, detects power outages and automatically becomes the home’s power source when the power goes out) to build its own network. Tesla can buy power from Powerwall owners and then sell it, which helps offset peak prices and ensures that excess stored power is available in the event of a power outage.
Tesla’s Virtual Power Plant program was essentially a springboard for launching its own energy business, Tesla Electric. The new division will allow Tesla to offer owners an overnight charging program. However, it will initially only be available to owners who have a Tesla Powerwall and live in Texas.
Tesla Senior Vice President of Engineering Drew Baglino shared the upcoming $30 per month charging program as follows: “By this summer, we’ll be offering retail electric plans to people who own our cars where they can get unlimited charging for $30 a month. Part of reducing the total cost of ownership of our vehicles.”
Tesla Electric plans in Texas are expected to be available in July 2023, with other locations to follow.
