The ministry said that American experts determined the satellite flight coordinates based on nuclear spy satellites, which means that Washington is directly responsible for this information.
Russia said the United States was responsible for the Russia-backed Ukrainian attack on Crimea with five US-supplied missiles, killing at least five people, including three children, and wounding 124 others.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that air defense systems shot down four of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles, and that the ammunition for the fifth missile exploded in the air.
The ministry said that American experts determined the satellite flight coordinates using basic information from American spy satellites, which means Washington is directly responsible.
The ministry said: “Responsibility for the deliberate missile attack on the citizens of Sevastopol lies above all with Washington, which supplied Ukraine with these weapons, and the Kiev regime, from whose territory this attack was carried out.”
The United States began supplying Ukraine with long-range ATACMS missiles, which have a range of up to 300 kilometers, earlier this year.
Reuters was unable to immediately verify battlefield reports from either side.
Television footage broadcast on Russian state television showed people running from the beach and some of them being carried to deck chairs.
Russian-backed authorities in Crimea said shrapnel fell shortly after noon near a beach on the northern side of the city of Sevastopol, where local residents were vacationing.
Russian Health Minister Mikhail Morasko said that at least 124 people were infected. The authorities said that among the injured were 27 children, five of whom were in serious condition.
Russia responds
The Defense Ministry said Russia would respond to Sunday’s attack, without elaborating. The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been in “constant contact with the army” since the Sevastopol attack.
Neither Ukraine nor the United States commented on the attack, which came a day after Ukraine announced that one person had been killed and 10 others injured in Russian attacks in the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, and now considers the Black Sea peninsula an integral part of its territory, although most of the world still considers it part of Ukraine.
Putin repeatedly accused the United States of using Ukraine to undermine Russia’s security, something Kiev and its Western allies deny, and warned of the increasing risks of direct confrontation between Moscow and the US-led NATO.
Putin sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in what he described as a defensive move against a hostile and aggressive West. Ukraine and the West say Russia is waging an imperialist-style war of aggression and trying to seize territory.
