Samsung open It will for the first time license its Tizen OS TV platform for use in other manufacturers’ TV models. Some partnerships have been announced with Akai, RCA, Bauhn, Linsar, Sunny and Vispera which are sold in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The partnership gives these manufacturers access to Tizen OS features such as Samsung TV Plus (a free TV and video streaming system), Global Guide to Discovery and personalized content recommendations, and Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant.
Samsung and LG agreements give manufacturers an extra option of their Smart TV menu beyond well-known solutions like Android TV, Roku, or Amazon Fire TV. While this is probably the first time you’ve heard of most of the brands mentioned, the fact that Samsung is opening up to its Tizen platform means it may reach TVs sold in the US at some point.
Samsung’s Smart TV and LG’s webOS are good alternatives to Android TV, both offering very good search and customization features, a choice of several voice assistants (their own as well as Alexa and Google), and Apple support for streaming (though not Chromecast’s) . Google TV is a major upgrade from Android TV, but the majority of TVs and streaming devices, like NVIDIA’s Shield TV, still use the latter — even though Google’s goal is ultimately to power all third-party devices for its new platform.
