Six years ago, the Turkish Coast Guard arrested him on charges of illegally transporting fuel. The examination conducted revealed that the cargo of his oil tanker had been incorrectly weighed and that he was carrying an illegally large additional quantity, approximately half of the cargo. He was convicted and imprisoned for three years in the Turkish prisons of Maltepe, located on the Asian side of Istanbul.

As it happens, during a fight with a fellow prisoner from Anatolia, he beat him so badly that he was hospitalized. When prison officers intervened, he assaulted them as well, and was tried again and spent another three years in prison.
