The Pacific Ocean is in danger of disappearing completely, creating a new supercontinent
According to Science Alert, Australian and Chinese geologists came to this terrifying finding after studying the behavior of Earth’s drifting tectonic plates.
The study was led by New Curtin University in Perth. Scientists believe that the supercontinent will form after the collision of Australia and Eurasia in about 200-300 million years. The only supercontinent was called Amasya.
“Over the past 2 billion years, Earth’s continents have collided with each other, forming a supercontinent every 600 million years, known as the supercontinent cycle,” said geologist Chuan Huang, author of the study.
Scientists have concluded that the Pacific Ocean will disappear due to the weakening of the upper layer of the oceanic crust, leaving only the Indian and Atlantic oceans on the planet.
The study says: “The Earth as we know it will be very different when Amasia forms. It is expected that sea levels will be lower and the vast interior of the supercontinent will be very dry with large fluctuations in daily temperatures.”
