Giannitsi Company’s factory in Lamia’s industrial estate was completely gutted by a fire that broke out around 9.30 pm for an unknown reason. This particular company and this particular factory were involved in school lunches that sent elementary school students to the hospital.
Announced at 9.30 am Fire department Within minutes, firefighters from the 7th EMAK, located 200 meters from the factory, rushed to the scene. However, the flames engulfed a large part of the factory and firefighters from various departments tried to control their speed. An alarm was sounded and fire engines and water tankers from all over Phitiotida moved to the industrial area of Lamia, where the fire had now spread throughout the building. Within 45 minutes the roof of the factory collapsed and thick black smoke and flames could be seen from the Lamia-Thessaloniki highway.
Firefighters tried to enter the factory with anti-suffocation masks to rule out the possibility that workers were inside, but strong explosions from gas tanks fueled the flames. Some of the first workers on the factory floor entered the front to remove the cars, mainly company trucks, from catching fire. Some of them, though putting out the fire, were taken to the fire station to put out the fire and removed it.
