Robots are advancing at a rapid pace and now scientists are advancing they managed to create A robot that can switch between solid and liquid form while maintaining its original shape. To better illustrate the experiment, they gave the robot a humanoid Lego figure, which managed to liquefy, pass through the bars of its cell, and rebuild itself to its original form outside the cell.
The similarities to the T-1000 droid from Terminator 2 are obvious.
The possible uses for such a robot are many. For example, small robots will be able to deliver targeted drugs to specific parts of the human body. They will also be able to remove foreign bodies from the human stomach for example, or repair electronic devices.
Hard materials are not suitable for navigation in a narrow and confined environment, while soft materials are weaker and more difficult to control. The scientists wanted a non-toxic robot that could easily change its state from soft to hard and vice versa at ambient temperature. So they turned to gallium, a soft metal with a melting point of 29.76 degrees Celsius, just below the average human body temperature. Then they surrounded gallium with magnetic particles, resulting in “Solid-liquid electromagnetic phase transition machine“.
Magnetic particles have two roles. One is that they make matter respond to magnetic fields, so one can inductively heat matter to cause a phase change. But the magnetic particles also give the robot mobility and the ability to move in response to changes in the magnetic field.
Scientists have created robots that can jump over chasms, climb over obstacles, and even detach themselves to perform coordinated tasks by moving objects around before joining and anchoring them.
Future studies will explore how these robots can be used in a biochemical context. What we show here is just a demonstration, proof of concept, but more study is needed to decide how it can actually be used for drug delivery or foreign body removal.
