Shannen Doherty died peacefully at her Malibu home Saturday, surrounded by loved ones who feared her estranged husband could claim her estate.
According to sources who spoke to the New York Post, close friends of the beloved “Beverly Hills 90210” actress were worried that Kurt Ishvarenko, who Shannen Doherty claims was cheating on her, could take over her multi-million dollar fortune.
The couple’s divorce was finalized just hours before Doherty died at the age of 53 after a nine-year battle with breast cancer that eventually spread to her brain and bones.
Shannen Doherty’s last wish
“We knew it was really bad,” a friend of the actress told Page Six of her diagnosis. “She fought so hard and it’s so unfair… Shannen died before the divorce was even finalized. All we wanted was for her last wish to come true, which was to die a divorcee.”
Court documents seen by Page Six show that Doherty signed the deposition on Friday, July 12. However, the order had not been finalized until the time of her death Saturday night.
Her friends did their best to keep the divorce out of the way.
Only a small group of loved ones knew that Shannen Doherty’s health had taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks, and Page Six sources say that Hollywood’s most famous attorney Lara Wasser worked tirelessly in the week leading up to the actress’s death to ensure the divorce could be finalized.
“Lara Wasser was working hard when it became clear it was time to announce the divorce,” a friend said. “Her friends were furious with Kourt. He was a cheater and had an extramarital affair,” the source said. “She believed he was cheating on her with multiple women — while she had cancer. You can’t forgive that.”
In fact, her friend Tara Furiani this week slammed Doherty’s ex for adding “so much pain and misery” to her life by not being a “decent man” and showing “little humanity to his dying wife.”
The court granted the divorce two days after her death.
In a rare move, a family law judge agreed to the actress’ final wishes and signed off on the divorce on Monday, two days after her death, TMZ reported. Typically, if someone dies during a divorce in California and most other states, the family law court loses jurisdiction and the case goes to probate court, one family law expert said.
Shannen Doherty ‘blames’ her ex-husband
Last month, Shannen Doherty claimed that her ex-husband was waiting for her to die before he could pay her alimony. He also accused Isvarenko of withholding information about his financial situation.
“During our marriage, and particularly in the last years of our relationship, Kurt earned millions of dollars annually,” Doherty said in court documents. “He made a name for himself in his industry. Kurt’s average annual income during the last three years of marriage was $672,916. My average annual income during the last three years of marriage was $259,708.
Isvarenko’s attorney, Katherine Hersema, denied to TMZ that her client is “just waiting for Shannen to die,” adding, “He wants the best for Shannen and wants them to be able to put this case behind them and move forward.”
