Pictures of the collapse of Chilean midfielder Estudiantes La Plata, Javier Altamirano, in the match against Boca Juniors, caused global shock.

A few hours after the unimaginable events of the Trabzonspor – Fenerbahce final at Babara Park Stadium in Trabzon, in the other corner of the world, in Argentina and specifically at the Jorge Luis Erce Stadium, a football player collapsed during the Estudiantes La Plata match – the Boca Juniors match progresses. In stoppage time in the 27th minute (0-0).

Javier Altamirano (24 years old, attacking midfielder) collapsed – without any previous contact – on the field, amid a state of panic among teammates and opponents. They lost their nerve, demanded the immediate entry of doctors, and dealt with the situation with very strong emotions.

The Chilean footballer was transferred to a local hospital, Platense Medical Institute, with everyone wishing him a speedy recovery and that he would not suffer serious damage.

Initial reports indicate that his condition is stable and under control, but more will be seen in the coming hours when he undergoes comprehensive medical examinations in the Buenos Aires suburb.

Life is more important than a sport or a match, and in such cases we must set the right example. The footballers were crying in the locker room. Javier is a kid that everyone loves. We had to show solidarity. We were desperate, we were crying, we had to be there for him and support him as a family. When one of us is not well, we must be there for him. Thank you to the Boca doctors and the entire team for their supportThese were the words of Estudiantes La Plata coach Eduardo Dominguez.

Edinson Cavani, Boca's Uruguayan striker, was one of the first to call for stopping the match, which the crowd booed and called for silence and respect for Altamirano. Estudiantes fans continued to boo him, but Cavani is very popular for his overall behavior in such a difficult situation.

Altamirano was born in the city of Talcaguano and is the son of Huachipato. He played for the team from the age of 12 to 23, and in August 2023 he was transferred on a three-year contract to Estudiantes.
