The Bangkok authorities announced that various explosions and fires occurred on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, Aug. 17, in three areas in southern Thai territory. This part of this country is the scene of an armed separatist conflict.
The Thai Armed Forces reported that seven people were slightly injured in the incidents in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces.
Nearly 17 places were targeted Tuesday after midnight, mainly shops and gas stations. The gendarmerie intends to recover video surveillance images as well as other evidence to determine the motives behind these explosions, as well as the sources themselves.
The insurgents often attack symbols of authority or Thai security forces.
Incidentally, Thailand, a predominantly Buddhist country, has been facing a separatist insurgency since 2004 in various Muslim-controlled areas near Malaysia. This conflict has already claimed the lives of about 7,300 people.
It should be noted that rebel attacks have become less frequent since the 2014 coup. As evidence of this, 113 people were killed in 2021 compared to about 900 in 2007, according to statistics from Deep South Watch. However, peace talks between the authorities and the rebels are practically stagnant.
