Trains from Athens to Thessaloniki are back on track
Train services resumed today on Hellenic Rail’s Athens-Thessaloniki rail axis, especially in the charging climate. The passing of the horrific collision at Intercity Tempe was also heart-wrenching.
It was the first train to cross the spot 34 days after the tragedy. In fact, the train driver announced at the time of the crossing that “we are now passing the scene of tragedy”.
The head of the train Mr. Papaconstantino could only say “a lot of emotions” as he passed the scene of that tragic collision and made the cross.
The first route of Hellenic Train is scheduled to start at 08:28 from Larissa station to Kalambaka with passengers.
The second route was scheduled at 10:28 and ran on the Athens – Thessaloniki route.
Security measures have been increased
Security measures are increased until the network is fully functional again with all required protocols. Reduced timetables, lower speeds/longer journey times, two conductors per station, two drivers and one conductor and only one train in tunnels.
According to the schedule, initially a pair of routes will be operated on the Athens-Thessalonica-Athens axis, from April 7 to April 11 there will be 2 pairs of routes and 3 pairs of routes.
Specifically, today’s itineraries include:
On the axis Athens – Thessaloniki – Athens:
Train IC52 from Athens, departure time 10:28
IC55 train from Thessaloniki, departure time 10:08
On the Athens – Kalambaka – Athens route:
From Athens, train 882, departure time 08:28
Train 887 from Kalambaka departs at 16:45
It is recalled that Hellenic Rail bus routes will remain in operation on selected routes until rail traffic is fully restored. According to OSE, on Friday, April 7, 2023, the routes Piraeus-Makoula-Praias and Athens-Leanokladi-Athens in the suburbs of Athens are planned, while the routes Paleofersalos-Kalambaka and Thessaloniki-Larissa on the Larissa-Volos lines are also expected to be announced.
