What cars are allowed on the circuit?
The following types of vehicles are exempt from Ring restrictions and are allowed to move freely in central Athens:
- Purely Electric cars, hybrids Electric cars, natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas vehicles.
- EURO 6 vehicles (except for the driving technologies mentioned above) emit lower amounts of 120 g/km CO2 (according to the New European Driving Cycle – NEDC) and classified for the first time in an EU Member State by 31 December 2020.
- EURO 6 vehicles (except for the driving technologies mentioned above) emit lower amounts of 145 g/km CO2 (in accordance with the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure – WLTP) and registered for the first time in an EU Member State from 1 January 2021 onwards.
In addition to electric and hybrid cars, there are also exceptions based on the driver’s status.
Specifically, the following vehicles are allowed to drive in central Athens:
- Medical vehicles (with special badge)
- Cars for physical therapists
- Disabled military vehicles
- Patients who require repeated treatment (with a relevant certificate from a nursing institution)
- Vehicles driven or transported by persons with disabilities, provided that the persons with disabilities are provided with a persons with disabilities parking permit
In addition, the following compounds are excluded:
- Vehicles transporting medicines and sensitive medical materials
- Transport vehicles
- Training cars for professional coaches stationed inside the ring
- Vehicles of government services, online travel agencies, organizations or public utility companies that have special registration numbers or are clearly marked for these services
- Vehicles headed by foreign diplomatic missions
- Compounds of press representatives, with a maximum per media outlet

The application boundaries of the small ring are the following avenues and streets: Alexandras – Zakharov – Mesogion – Fedebedou – Mikalakopoulou – SP Mercury – Freaksidos – Lemitou – Ilio Island – Amber. Franzi – Singro – Hamsterna – Piraeus – Ira Odos – Constantinople – Achilleos – Karaiskaki Square – Carollo – Marni – October 28 (Patission) – Alexandras.
The boundaries of the small ring are marked with special signs bearing the word “D” on a yellow background, and are located on each entrance road to the ring.
According to the Road Traffic Law, violation of the ring is punishable by an administrative fine of 200 euros. In addition, violators who do not comply with instructions from police authorities to immediately leave the prohibited area are subject to imprisonment for up to one year.
