This is the company’s new smartwatch, which offers an affordable option compared to the flagship Galaxy Watch models.
The Galaxy Watch used to be relatively affordable compared to the competition, but over the past couple of years, Samsung has raised the starting price of its watches by $50 due to inflation. The FE will retail for $199 for the Bluetooth version and $249.99 for the LTE version. With this addition, Samsung’s smartwatch lineup is similar to Apple’s, with a budget model, a flagship model, and a more premium option.
Like other entry-level models, the FE lacks some important technical features of larger models to save costs. For example, the FE only comes in a 40mm size with a slightly smaller 1.2-inch OLED display. The FE also has an Exynos W920 chip instead of the W930, with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Most of the sensors remain the same, but the temperature sensor introduced last year is missing. The battery is also smaller at 247 mAh while it is still unknown if there is support for fast charging.
However, despite being a budget model, the FE features the same sapphire crystal lens, IP68 rating, and 5ATM water resistance. It also features the same one-click “release” strap mechanism, NFC payment capability, and built-in GPS. In terms of connectivity, there’s LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, and Wi-Fi. Also, like Samsung’s flagship watches, the FE features OneUI Watch 5 suite, Wear OS 4, high/low heart rate alerts, electrocardiograms, body composition analysis, and custom heart rate zones.
FE’s announcement comes as a bit of a surprise given that Samsung usually unveils its wearables at its summer Unpacked event, which is expected to be held next month in Paris. This year’s event, as everything shows, will be full of new models, many of which will also belong to Samsung’s wearables series. In addition to the new Galaxy Watch 7, we expect to see a new Galaxy Watch Ultra as well as the Galaxy Ring. Given all this, the relatively simple FE could easily get lost among the ads.
The Bluetooth version of the Galaxy Watch FE will go on sale in the US starting June 24, while the LTE version will be released later this year.
