The Alternative for Germany party is the first party in an opinion poll in Brandenburg with a record percentage

A year before the Brandenburg state elections, the AfD has a clear lead in the opinion polls, while the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats are competing for second place.

According to an opinion poll conducted by the Infratest-Demap institute on behalf of the Berlin-Brandenburg radio rbb24, the AfD received a staggering 32%, followed by the Social Democrats with 20%, and the Christian Democratic Union with 18%. The Greens and the Left occupy fourth place with 8%, while the Liberals get 6%. The Liberals (FDP) were excluded from the local parliament by 4%. In 2019, the SPD and CDU combined 26.2% (-5.7 from 2014) and 15.6% (-7.4) respectively, and since then the state has been governed by a coalition of the SPD, CDU and the Green Party. The Alternative for Germany party received 23.5% in the 2019 elections, increasing its strength by 11.3 points.

In today’s poll, 57% said they were dissatisfied with the state government, but Prime Minister Dietmar Wojtke (SPD) maintained an approval rating of 51%. On the contrary, despite the high percentages obtained by the Alternative for Germany party, the head of its parliamentary group and the most likely candidate for the upcoming elections, Hans-Christoph Bird, receives the approval of only 7% of Brandenburg citizens.

The poll highlights energy policy (27%) and immigration (19%) as the most important problems facing citizens. Issues of environmental protection concern 11% of respondents. However, immigration is considered the biggest problem among AfD supporters (32%).

Also, 56% of respondents stated that they would not object to the participation of the extreme right in local government, while 38% expressed the opposite opinion. At the same time, 58% believe that the AfD does not sufficiently distance itself from far-right positions, a view expressed by 77% in September 2019.
