Technology company Engineered Arts presented its latest humanoid robot, Ameca, in its showroom, “mesmerizing” attendees with extremely good fluid facial expressions, the ability to chat and perform a series of movements.
With the help of the advanced GPT-4 language model, Ameca represents a major advance in the field of human-like robotics. Behind his eyes are cameras, and in his ears are seamlessly integrated microphones to allow for natural eye contact – an integral aspect of human interaction. Ameca wowed the MWC audience by demonstrating her ability to smile, dance but most importantly engage visitors in sensible dialogue. This was an indication that the company's showroom was constantly filled with people who wanted to interact with the humanoid robot, and record its responses on its smartphone camera.
The enthusiastic public response highlights the leaps made in humanoid robotics, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in artificial intelligence. However, Ameca also raises ethical issues on a larger level regarding safety, abuse prevention and psychological impact, as sooner or later these robots will enter everyday life. Engineered Arts, based in the UK, aims to develop robots rather than replace humans, with Ameca one day being able to find a use as an assistant or caregiver to complement humans.
