It’s about time that OpenAI announced that ChatGPT for Android will be released sometime next week. In addition, the list of applications has already been published on Google Play and users can pre-register to be able to download them as soon as they become available.
It’s not clear if the app will initially only be available in the US, though unlike the iOS app’s initial release, the app’s page on the Play Store allows users from several countries (including Greece) to register their interest in downloading the app. OpenAI made ChatGPT for iPhone available in a handful of countries upon launch, expanding the availability of its app to many more countries in the coming weeks.
Already for some time, ChatGPT has been accessed via Android devices using a browser, but the standalone app is a more optimized way to chat with the popular AI chatbot. iOS users, for example, got support for Siri and Shortcuts in June. They can create a ChatGPT prompt in Shortcuts and save it as a link to send to friends. In addition, they can ask Siri to activate the app or create these shortcuts among other things.
OpenAI recently started testing a new opt-in feature for ChatGPT Plus subscribers that gives chatbot AI a “memory stick”. With the feature enabled, the chatbot remembers the user’s identity across conversations, which the company says can improve responses. The feature is designed to work across the platform, which means that Android users who sign up for and subscribe to the Plus plan will likely see a flat memory boost in their app when it launches.
