Public opinion in Austria was shocked by the case of a mother who tortured her 12-year-old son and kept him locked in a dog cage.
Today, the Austrian authorities confirmed that they are investigating the 32-year-old woman, who has been remanded in custody on charges of attempted murder. The same She appealed to the Supreme Court to be released pending trial, but her request was denied.
A police spokesman confirmed to Agence France-Presse (Agence France-Presse) that the accused is still in detention and the investigation is expected to end by the end of the summer by bringing charges against the 32-year-old.
On November 22, 2022, a social worker who visited her home found the boy in a semi-comatose state and called an ambulance. The child was taken to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia, while his mother was arrested the next day and detained in the city of Krems, west of Vienna.
Authorities sent a social worker to the 32-year-old’s home at the request of the boy’s divorced father, who lives elsewhere.
The woman is accused of dousing her son with “cold water several times during the day, while leaving the windows of the house open for hours, even in sub-zero temperatures.” The mother allegedly tortured the boy from early September to late November 2022, repeatedly beating him, causing him to malnourish and keeping him in a dog cage.
The Austrian police spokesman told AFP that the 12-year-old’s health has improved significantly since his release, but he has not overcome the trauma of the abuse he has been subjected to.
