According to the study, over the next three decades, the Earth’s population will increase by only 600 million to 8.6 billion and then begin a sharp decline that will result in the population shrinking by two billion and reaching six billion. This decline seems good at first level as news about environmental problems caused by human presence and activity on the planet, but nevertheless the study authors stress that this population decline is likely not to be accompanied by any noticeable environmental benefits. They also noted that population decline would make humanity as a whole older and reduce the proportion of people of working age, placing a greater burden on young people to fund health care and pensions.
