More than 30 years later, Microsoft Office has been renamed “Microsoft 365” to mark the suite of giant productivity apps the group now contains and continues to grow. While Office apps like Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint won’t go away, Microsoft will now primarily refer to these apps as part of Microsoft 365 instead of Microsoft Office.
Microsoft has been pushing the new name for years, after renaming Office 365 subscriptions to Microsoft 365 two years agoBut the changes are a little bigger now. Microsoft explains in Related Q&A column.
This means that if you use any of the custom Office apps, you’ll soon all get a Microsoft 365 badge and a new logo. The first logo and design changes will appear on Office.com in November, followed by the Office app on Windows in January and then on iOS and Android, with all apps getting the new branding.
The new Microsoft 365 app
The Microsoft 365 umbrella will now include Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Loop, Clipchamp and Stream as well as the new Designer app announced at the Microsoft Ignite conference. A centralized Microsoft 365 app for both smartphones and desktops will display fellow user and upcoming meetings while being a central hub for all their files and documents. It will also allow custom tags to group and organize content.
However, the Microsoft Office branding will not disappear immediately. Microsoft will continue to offer one-time purchases of the Office suite of applications to consumers and businesses through the Office 2021 and Office LTSC programs. Microsoft Office is now an old brand of Microsoft, meaning that when new features are announced, they’ll make it to Microsoft 365, not Microsoft Office.
