A Toronto court today (November 12, 2023) convicted former Canadian fashion guru Peter Nygard of four counts of sexual assault, Canadian television station CBC News reported.
Nygard, 82, was on trial in Ontario Superior Court on five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible restraint. The case included crimes committed between 1980 and 2005. Jurors found him not guilty of a fifth count of sexual assault and a count of forcible restraint.
Nygard was arrested by Canadian police in late 2020 at the request of US prosecutors who accused him of using his business to lure women and young girls in the United States, Canada and the Bahamas and force them to sexually satisfy him and his associates. About a year later, he was tried for the same reasons in Toronto.
Nygard’s sentencing will be announced at a later date. His lawyer, Brian Greenspan, did not rule out appealing the ruling.
The United States asked Canada to extradite him, and accused him of human trafficking between 1990 and 2020.
Nygard was born in Finland but grew up in Manitoba, Canada, where he founded his own fashion company and eventually became one of the richest men in the country.
