Actor and director Giorgos Michalkopoulos has died at the age of 85. Spyros Pipilas announced the news of his death.
“Some time ago we reported the sad news. The tragic loss of Greek culture, our theater and the family of artists? We learned of the passing of the great actor, man, activist, trade unionist, family man, Giorgos Michalkopoulos… We will never forget the moment of his passing and we are grateful to him for the legacy he left us.” Spyros wrote. Pepylas: “Our heartfelt condolences to his great beloved Athena and his children.”
George Michakopoulos was born on February 28, 1938 in Athens and studied acting at the Arts Theater Drama School. In theater he appeared in shows such as Crime and Punishment, Death of a Salesman, Mr. Green Thursdays and The Price.
In cinema, he played in films such as Basil Awake, Jamal al-Hallaq, A Knight for Fasula and The Look of Ulysses. On television, he starred in the TV series He and Him in the 1970s.
He won the Karolos Kone Award for Best Actor and the “Emilios Veakis” Award. He was also a Municipal Councilor of Athens (1974-1986) and Vice President of KETHEA.
George Michalacopoulos has managed to keep his personal life out of the public eye. Very few knew that in addition to being a great theatrical person, he was also a happy family man.
He was married with two daughters, Ioana, a director, and Eleni, a painter.
