The residence of Peruvian President Dina Boliarte was searched yesterday, with the country's president suspected of not including a collection of luxury watches, specifically Rolex, in her ownership declaration.
According to a police document seen by Agence France-Presse, about 40 policemen and judges were mobilized “with the aim of searching the house and confiscating Rolex watches.”
In images broadcast on local television, investigators appeared to have surrounded the president's residence in Surquijo, a suburb of Lima, and formed a human barricade to prevent vehicular traffic in the surrounding streets.
The police intervention came at the request of the Public Prosecutor, after the prosecution rejected Bolovarti’s request to produce luxury watches and documents related to their possession.
If she is tried, Peru's president would, under the constitution, not be able to stand trial before July 2026, when her term as president expires.
The Rolex scandal erupted after a local news website, La Encerrona, published on March 15 a series of photos showing Boluarte wearing different luxury watches in 2021 and 2022 while she was in government.
Bolwarti confirmed that her hands are “clean” and that she only has an old watch that she bought with her savings.
The 61-year-old president is already being investigated for “genocide, manslaughter and serious injury” after more than 50 people died during two months of social unrest that accompanied her rise to the presidency.
Dina Boluarte became president after the overthrow and arrest of leftist head of state Pedro Castillo, and she was his deputy.
