The 34-year-old, known as Sanqiang, was found dead 12 hours after a video was filmed of him drinking bottle after bottle, according to CNN.
It is said that the influencer drank too much as part of a challenge with another influencer. The challenge called “PK” is an informal competition between influencers to win more “gifts” from their followers.
The drink he drank is called Baijiu and contains 30% to 60% alcohol.
“I don’t know how much he drank before I opened my computer, but in the last part of the video I already saw him drink three bottles and open the fourth,” says one of the influencer’s friends. The challenge ended at 1 am and his family found him dead 12 hours later.
The need for stricter regulation of social media in China
In China, dozens of influencers are trying to sell the products of big companies in real time, thus earning billions. Many of them, to keep their followers interested, participate in contests and challenges which they also broadcast live.
Wang’s death is expected to reignite debates about the need for stricter rules for social media.
