Novak Djokovic’s move to commemorate Kobe Bryant with a special T-shirt could not be the subject of comment during the US Open trophy presentation ceremony.
The 36-year-old Serb was asked about this and analyzed the reasons that pushed him to this action: “I thought of making this shirt in case I won the championship. That was about seven days ago. I didn’t share it with anyone until a few days ago when I asked my people to help me put on this shirt.”
Kobe and I were close, he was a good friend of mine. We talked a lot about winning mentality when I was struggling with injury and trying to get back to the top of the game.
He was one of the people I relied on the most. He was always there to give me advice and support me in a friendly way.
What happened a few years ago with his death and the death of his daughter hurt me deeply. He thought the number 24 was the number he wore when he became a Lakers legend and a world basketball legend. “So I thought this would be a nice symbolic gesture to acknowledge what he’s done for me.”
