With this in mind, Withings engineers They added a new job As “eyes closed” in the new smart scale from Body Smart. Instead of showing your weight, the scale displays motivational messages or other metrics like step count, air quality, and weather.
It may seem strange to exclude the most important measurement from the scale, but it seems to be a very useful feature for those who want to track their health or fitness and have a history of eating disorders, get frustrated easily, or want to focus on the progress of other metrics like muscle growth. On the other hand, you can just keep your weight private and only make it visible within the company’s mobile app.
This is not the first time we’ve seen such a feature in a device of this type. Another scale, Qardiobase 2 from Qardio for example, has a smart feedback feature that replaces numbers with a smiley face or a non-smiling face to show your progress against your goals in terms of weight loss. Withings has a slightly broader scope in that it doesn’t necessarily need to be mapped to any weight loss goal.
Withings has released a number of smart scales, including the entry-level Body model, the $199.95 Body Comp model, and the flagship Body Check, which costs $399.95. In terms of price and features, the new Body Smart digital scale stands next to the company’s less expensive solutions, costing $99.95. Like other Withings smart scales, it can monitor your heart rate and use a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method to determine body composition. Basically, it sends a tiny electrical pulse through your legs to measure your body fat, visceral fat (“bad fat”), muscle mass and water.
In addition to standard bioelectrical impedance (lipid measurement) measurements based on different tissue resistance (BIA), the Body Smart scale also offers measurement of basal metabolic rate (BMR) and measurement of metabolic age. While these features won’t be available at launch, Withings has announced that they will be integrated into the scale via an OTA (over-the-air) update in May along with a pregnancy-related feature. The new Withings scale also includes a color display (when other scales are black and white) and runs on three AAA batteries for up to 15 months. It’s available now in the US for $99.95 in two colors, black and white.
