The Grid Solutions joint venture, in which Mytilineos partners with GE Genova, has been selected as a supplier for a major power project in Britain by SP Transmission (SPT) and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET). Specifically, the consortium will build substations that will enable the subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link to connect to Britain’s onshore electricity transmission network.
The 190km, £2.5bn energy pipeline will carry enough green electricity to power more than two million homes across the UK
GE Vernova is working with Mytilineos to build the engineering and provide technology for the HVDC converter stations, which are the terminals of an HVDC cable and convert direct current into alternating current for use in the terrestrial transmission network.
The HVDC cable system is approximately 190 kilometers long, with converter stations at each end to connect it to the country’s existing electricity transmission network infrastructure.
Nuclear and Networks Minister Andrew Bowie said: “We have a world-class renewable energy sector that helps us power Britain with reliable, clean and affordable energy for families and businesses.”
“This is a crucial moment for the energy sector as it drives the transition to net zero,” said Peter Roper, EGL1 Project Manager. “GE’s Grid Solutions business Vernova and Mytilineos as preferred suppliers are industry leaders in terms of high technology and offer significant expertise in energy delivery. Necessary infrastructure To meet the UK’s future energy needs and achieve net zero targets.
