The Starfield Leaker Who Was Stolen and Sold 67 Copies Arrested

A man has leaked 45 minutes of gameplay from the highly anticipated sci-fi RPG Bethesdathe starfieldHe was finally caught by the authorities last week. Specifically, 29-year-old Darren Harris is facing one count of felony theft and two misdemeanors for his involvement in the incident.

The police report states that Harris He stole 67 copies of Starfield from a warehouse From Vantiva in Memphis, Tennessee, where the logistics company handles distribution of the game. Stolen copies are valued at around $2,500, though the actual retail value could be much higher depending on the version of the game. Starfield has a Regular Edition at $69.99 and a Collector’s Edition at $299.99 in this market.

What’s notable about the incident is that Harris uploaded a video of himself playing Starfield on August 22, which quickly went viral on the internet. He then began selling copies of the game on e-commerce platform Mercari, posting other videos of himself shipping packages to buyers. In one, he praised the game and its director, Todd Howard, while smoking marijuana.

As the matter began to escalate, Harris deleted his social media accounts, but was eventually arrested and taken into custody on August 24. Police searched his home and found a FedEx package containing a copy of Starfield, as well as six other copies of the game in various versions. A quantity of marijuana and three handguns were also seized, one of which was stolen. Harris claimed he bought the copies from someone else.

The leaker was eventually released on August 25 on $10,000 bail. He is charged with felony theft of property valued between $2,500 and $10,000, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor theft of property valued at $1,000 or less. His trial is scheduled for 8 September.
