In a major development on the southern front, the Ukrainian army launched a counter-attack on the village of Rivnopil, located in the Donetsk region, and liberated it. This achievement brings them closer to their strategic goal of retaking Mariupol, as Rivnopil is only 95 kilometers north of the city.
The news of the recapture of Rivnopil was announced by Hanna Malyar, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, via the Telegram application.
“Our forces have recaptured Rivnopil. We are moving forward,” Malyar said, referring to the advances made by Ukrainian forces in recent weeks.
This success comes after the Ukrainian forces recovered several villages and other areas near the contact line in Zaporizhia, as reported by Ukrainian media.
Rivnopil, although it is a small village, is of great importance due to its proximity to Mariupol. The city, the cradle of Ukrainian Hellenism, located on the Sea of Azov, was the focus of the conflict between the Ukrainian and Russian forces, due to its strategic location and economic importance as a major port.
A video circulating on Facebook shows soldiers of Ukraine’s 31st Mechanized Brigade standing proudly with the Ukrainian flag in front of a rundown farm in Rivnopil. Among them is a soldier who confidently declares to the camera that the Russians have fled.
Russia acknowledged that there had been fighting in that area on June 16, acknowledging the intensity of the counter-offensive launched by Kiev two weeks earlier to recapture territory captured by Moscow.
While the Ukrainian army continues its counterattack, the Russian forces are trying to put up better defenses and delay Zelensky’s forces after Wagner’s move causes temporary disorder in some sections of the Russian forces.
In any case, it must be emphasized that 95 kilometers may seem small in the mind of a civilian, but in military operations it is a very difficult achievement.
