The US is rebuilding, and does not want new elections in Venezuela.

The White House has corrected the verbal fire, withdrawing Joe Biden’s apparent call earlier Thursday for new elections in Venezuela, with a US presidential spokesman insisting it was “very clear” to Washington that the opposition candidate had won “the most votes” in the disputed vote.

Earlier yesterday, during his brief remarks to the press before boarding a helicopter, a reporter asked the US president: “What is your message to Maduro?” and “Do you support new elections in Venezuela?” with Joe Biden responding: “I do.”

But the US presidential spokeswoman confirmed that Biden actually wanted to point out the “ridiculous position of (Venezuelan socialist President Nicolas) Maduro,” who according to Washington is not showing “honesty” regarding the outcome of the presidential elections scheduled for July 28 in the Latin American country.

He stressed that “it is very clear to the majority of the Venezuelan people, the United States and a growing number of countries that Edmundo González Urrutia was the one who won the most votes on July 28.”

“The United States again calls for respect for the will of the Venezuelan people and the beginning of discussions on the transition and return to democratic norms,” he added.

Joe Biden’s statement caused a stir after Brazil and Colombia, the two countries that took the initiative to resolve the political crisis, abandoned the idea of holding new elections.

But Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was quick to announce her opposition to the possibility.

The new crisis in Venezuela came after the National Electoral Council declared Mr Maduro the winner. The opposition disputes the official result, saying Edmundo González Urrutia won, alleging fraud.

The announcement of Nicolás Maduro’s re-election for a third consecutive term sparked protests by opposition supporters and riots immediately after the election. The official count speaks of 25 dead, 192 wounded and 2,400 arrested.
