Theodoros Skylakakis: End of 2025 to beginning of 2026, first exploratory drilling for hydrocarbons – Economic Post

At the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, Environment and Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis will “witness” the first natural gas research drilling in our country.

“The gas fields in Southeastern Europe are of particular importance for Europe’s energy security. Greece plays the role of a fuel importing country in Europe. The rate of de-addiction in the European Union is also high,” Mr. Skylakakis noted in the context of the “Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum” held In Athens, he noted that “of Russian gas, with the aim of stopping imports by 2027, the role of liquefied natural gas imports from Egypt and Israel will be strengthened.”

What is the story of gas exploration in Greece?

The minister indicated that the first exploratory drilling in Greece for natural gas is expected to be conducted at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.

Carbon dioxide storage in Prinos

At the same time, the development of CO2 storage technologies is dynamically coming to the fore.

Mr. Skylakakis pointed to Prinos’ ongoing project to store carbon dioxide. The project has a budget of more than €1.5 billion, of which around €600 million belongs to the DESFA division and the rest of Energean. The Recovery Fund will also contribute €150 million.

He pointed out that there are 6 regions in Greece that meet the specifications for carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Energean’s design includes creating a warehouse at the depleted Prinos depot, with an absorption capacity of 2.5 to 3 million tons of carbon dioxide per year when fully operational. The first phase, with a capacity of about 1 million tons per year, is expected to begin in 2026, with a gradual injection of carbon dioxide, while the second phase (up to 3 million tons) will follow in 2028.

He pointed out that “the project is important for moving forward in the context of the goal of decarbonization.”

According to Mr Skylakakis, only two similar facilities are being developed in the wider region, in Italy and France. Taken together, these three infrastructures are not sufficient to meet emissions storage needs. In light of this, similar infrastructures should be used in neighboring countries outside the European Union, as is the case in Egypt.
