THESSALONIKI: Crucial seconds that keep a 39-year-old woman alive

“If it wasn’t for EKAV, I wouldn’t be here today,” said the 39-year-old volunteer, who was intubated for 8 days.

Shocking minutes of emergency rescuers trying to save a young woman from a snake bite in Thessaloniki have been captured on video by a mobile ambulance unit.

On the afternoon of May 26, 39-year-old Konstantina, a volunteer herpetologist, was called to the 64th elementary school of Thessaloniki to catch a viper, which was found by the school teacher. The snake bit the 39-year-old woman the moment it caught her. The woman went into anaphylactic shock. As soon as the professor realized what had happened, he informed the EKAV.

Within two minutes, two motorcycle rescuers from EKAV arrived at the scene. Seeing the seriousness of the girl’s condition, they called an ambulance and EKAB’s mobile unit.

In the video of the girl’s rescue, the doctor of the mobile phone unit shows the shocking attempts to resuscitate the girl. The images recorded by the camera are poignant and testify to the zeal with which the people of EKAB fought to save a human life.

The doctor and EKAV rescue team administered first aid to the 39-year-old woman and took her to “Papanikolu” hospital. The volunteer herpetologist fought another tough battle in intensive care for 8 days, breathing with mechanical support. As his condition improved, he was discharged from the intensive care unit. The 39-year-old returned home with her 5-year-old child in her arms after a multi-day battle in the hospital.

“I wouldn’t be here today without EKAV”

About four months later, Konstantina recounts what she experienced that day and, as she insists, warmly thanks the EKAB rescuers for saving her life. “I went to release the animal from the school. In the course of my business and with a little mishandling of mine, I received a bite that put me in a difficult situation” The 39-year-old herpetologist explains. “I didn’t feel anything in those seconds,” he added. “I asked the school teacher to contact EKAB immediately because I felt it was a difficult situation,” explains Constantina.

“I want to thank and emphasize the importance of EKAV’s existence,” she said, while “if EKAV didn’t exist, I wouldn’t exist, I wouldn’t be here now, and I wouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t be making videos” . In closing, he thanked EKAB and staff for their prompt and life-saving intervention. “If someone asks me, ‘Konstantina, what is ECAV for you?’ I would say ‘second chance at life’.”
