Time change: what does a missing second mean?
Planet Earth is about to lose one second for the first time in history, and while that may not seem like a lot, it's pretty significant.
Scientists believe that the Earth's rotation is already accelerating, and this means that We have to take a second from our watches.
Basically, it means that The Earth does not need a full 24 hours to rotate. Change has not happened yet, but is expected to happen in the near future.
By now, we're all used to moving our clocks back and forth (this will happen tonight). As we change our clocks to make better use of natural daylight, losing even a second of our time is completely unexpected.
Basically it means that Instead of there being 60 seconds in the last minute before midnight, there will be only 59 seconds. In other words, the time 23.59.59 will not exist, which is very impressive.
Of course, a large part of our daily lives depends on time, as well as the technologies we use and financial markets around the world. But since the Earth's rotation is not completely constant, it may take a second for them to line up again.
“This is an unprecedented situation and a big issue,” DrDuncan Agnew, a geophysicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, said: Agnew said it “wouldn't lead to disaster,” but it was a wonderful event.
“It's not a major change in the Earth's rotation that will cause some kind of catastrophe or anything, but it's a wonderful thing. It's another sign that we're in a very unusual time,” he added.
