What researchers are looking for
A search of the attacker’s vehicle revealed a receiver with wires leading to a metal box possibly containing explosives in the trunk of the car, which was found parked at the Butler Farm Show Grounds.
Investigators are trying to determine whether a remote control device attached to a possible explosive device in the gunman’s car was part of the killing plan.
One theory investigators are considering is whether the shooter intended to detonate the explosives in his car as a distraction and draw security personnel’s attention away from the shooting site and toward the explosion, law enforcement sources told CNN.
Sources believe that the fact that the attacker was spotted by civilians and confronted by a police officer trying to reach the roof may have prompted him to accelerate his plan and bypass the distraction plan.
