The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has announced the intended timeline for progressing the order for 40 new F-16 Vipers as well as 79 upgrade kits for older aircraft.
Thus, in a related statement, they recorded that they expect to receive the US letter of acceptance at the end of February, to continue negotiations and submit the application – where we will also see the final cost – sometime between June and July of this year. The Turkish side also says that the discussions do not include conditions of “use” and restrictions imposed on fighters.
Turkish media also hint that the 40 new fighters may be manufactured directly in Turkey! At the facilities of the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), which has the relevant know-how and has produced and assembled F-16 spotters for previous Turkish orders, while also being a regional support center for the type. If Turkey succeeds in something like this, perhaps the increased cost of $23 billion, which the US side estimates for the entire order, can be explained. In other words, the cost may include upgrading Turkish production lines so that they manufacture the latest version of the F-16.
