The first topic discussed in gaming circles in the past 24 hours was his deletion incident Ubisoft A user account that has been logged in for some time.
Specifically, the claim was that if you don’t log into your Ubisoft account for two years, you could lose it, and as a result you can’t even access digital games you’ve purchased from the French giant. Obviously, this immediately sparked discussions about digital games in general, reigniting the debate as to whether or not they were better than retail.
Finally, Ubisoft came out to clear the scene and – it seems – the misunderstanding. The company confirmed that if the user purchases games, his account will not be deleted. Meanwhile, it indicated that it is obligated to delete the accounts of inactive European users, due to the relevant legislation in the European Union. Below you can see his statement wccftech.
Ubisoft’s official response:
For many years, we have implemented the account deletion process in accordance with the requirements of the GDPR (Article 5.1 e regarding the obligation to limit the data retention period). Our policies comply with legal requirements and industry standards. This measure also protects our players from fraud.
Account deletion follows a very rigorous process. Therefore, we consider the following four criteria before deleting an account:
- The account’s gaming activity since its creation.
- Account Libraries: Accounts that include purchased PC games are not eligible for deletion.
- Duration of account inactivity, i.e. last login to our ecosystem (including Ubisoft games on Steam and other platforms).
- In practice, we have never deleted accounts that have been inactive for less than 4 years.
- An active subscription associated with the account.
In any case, before the deletion becomes permanent, three emails are sent to the player within 30 days, offering to restore their account. In addition, if the user attempts to log in within the 30-day period, they will automatically receive a warning and a link to reactivate their account.
