The Minister of Development, Adonis Georgiadis, announced the agreement to try to control the prices of fifty basic goods in a meeting he held with representatives of retail businesses and representatives of supermarkets.
Mr. As Georgiadis immediately stated, each supermarket chain agreed to deliver a housewife’s basket in October, which included 50 items necessary for a family’s life, and they promised not to continue price increases. Throughout the month, or if this is not possible, do small increments.
The minister mentioned that the above agreement was reached through today’s meeting, but he will hold a meeting with industry representatives next week to control the increase.
Mr. Georgiadis pointed out, “As he mentioned, the freeze is not in their hands. We will have a meeting with the entire industry next week to see how the industry can contribute to contain the price rise. He added: “Everybody understands the extent of the need to keep basic products for Greeks at a very low level. I believe that.”
The minister also clarified that this is “not a human agreement”. Each chain will develop its own policy. We have not breached competition laws. We would never do that.”
Also, during this meeting the adequacy of the product was discussed and it was confirmed that there is no problem in supplying the market.
“In the current situation, this is an issue that concerns many European countries and I want to thank them, because the Greek market, as during the pandemic, was able to stand alone and not have shortage problems, which it will now have to deal with. The full supply of products despite the huge international pressures on different types of products. .This is the result of the very good work they have done in the previous months to get enough products to create a safety code for Greek consumers,” the minister said.
Measures to help reduce energy and energy costs were also discussed, and Mr. Georgiadis said: “Greece will not have any power outages. We are fully prepared for this. Thanks to the good work of the government, we will be one of the lucky energy countries and we will not have such problems,” he added, adding that “the government will be close to the sector to solve institutional problems. , but will also resolve the issues that arise along the way. So we can continue our good cooperation, but we will monitor the implementation of these decisions very strictly”.
Finally, the minister reiterated that DIMEA’s controls on the profit margin of products critical to the world’s livelihood will be continuous and intensive in this difficult situation.
