A dress code prohibiting black clothing applies to the school. United States of America The explanation is simple.
Charles High School, part of the El Paso Independent School District, bans students from wearing black, citing mental health concerns.
The school’s principal, Nick DeSandis, wrote in a letter to parents that a “look” had “taken over the campus with students wearing black shirts and black underwear,” according to local media, as reported by the BBC.
He wrote that appearance was more associated with depression, mental health problems, and/or crime than with happy, healthy children who were ready to learn.
Norma De La Rosa, president of the El Paso Teachers Union, told local media that the new dress code allows students to wear some or all black on certain dress-free days.
She added that teachers have seen a change in the way students dress when they feel stressed or depressed.
However, the new policy has drawn mixed reviews from parents and others in the community.
“Maybe we should focus on bullying! This is a mental health issue,” one Facebook user commented in a social media post about the policy.
Some have said that changing schools does not address the root causes of teen mental health problems and will only punish struggling students.
“Oh yes, because the problem is the clothes, not what they are experiencing inside them. Give them advice instead of stopping them from wearing what makes them feel comfortable,” said one commenter.
