Morocco has had enough. After nearly ten years of drafting its plan for the autonomy of the Sahara without obtaining international recognition of its sovereignty over this disputed region by the Sahrawi separatists from the Polisario Front, the kingdom has radically changed its strategy. Rather than continuing the pressure inside the United Nations, as the dossier falters over the impossibility of organizing the referendum, Morocco is ostensibly moving away from its traditional allies, too shy of its own taste, and is seeking fresh support from 2016.
In December 2020, Donald Trump suddenly offered to trade US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara for Restoration of Moroccan diplomatic relations with Israel.
