With an “urgent message” to the commissioners Correspondents from the White House, the US Presidency, announced yesterday at noon that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, has invited the Prime Minister of Sweden, Olf Christerson, for consultations.
This important meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 5th, immediately after the United States National Independence Day celebrations.
Since the announcement, we have heard several scenarios, most notably:
Firstly, That Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s final answer is categorically negative and that Mr. Biden wants to … “consolation” and strengthen the Swedish Prime Minister and
secondly, That the final answer of the Turkish president will be positive, but that he is also asking for other concessions from the Scandinavian country, regarding Sweden’s alleged support for anti-Turkish terrorists.
All of the above are, of course, assumptions, because we are dealing with unpredictable politicians, with Erdogan at the fore. The Americans know that when pressured it becomes more and more negative and this does not serve their purpose, which is of course Sweden’s accession to NATO. That’s why they do what they can – badly, of course – on their part. And stress is part of that plan.
- The most likely scenario, in my opinion, is this: Mr. Biden wants to strengthen the Prime Minister of Sweden, but since the Turkish position remains negative until July 5th, he will try to negotiate the final. So if he does, he should also contact Tayyip Erdogan.
I should point out that the next day, July 6, a meeting of Turkish and Swedish officials will be held under the mediation of the NATO Secretary General for the supposed final negotiations. At the same time, negotiations continue daily and unannounced phone calls are made.
It is significant, however, that US government officials dealing with this issue have not contacted US lawmakers in recent days who oppose the sale of the F-16 fighter jets.
Either because they have no news to tell, or because they will wait for Mr. Biden to meet with the Swedish prime minister, who is also expected to speak to MPs and senators, even though they are on leave due to the national holiday 4Ha July, a day when Americans celebrate their national independence.
Today I will repeat that none of the legislators of the “anti-Turkish” front have broken, they remain firm in their position regarding the F-16.
- There are also those who put Sweden’s accession to NATO as a condition for signing off on the sale of US fighters to Turkey, and those who side with those who argue that stricter terms are required to receive the F-16s. They will not be satisfied with Swedish integration alone.
5the July will be an interesting day for strengthening NATO and the Swedish Armed Forces. If the point is a painless retreat on the part of Stockholm, we can assume that it will. Although the Swedish prime minister told Brussels, always with “manic delight”, that he would reject any (further) blackmail on the part of Ankara.
As I indicated in the previous days, Sweden’s accession concerns Greece and Cyprus. Because Erdogan, in addition to requests for the Straits and the Republic of Cyprus, is also demanding to secure F-16 fighters. Which he will use against Greece and Cyprus.
