The news that they were planning to kill Volodymyr Zelensky and other high-ranking Ukrainian officials came like a thunderbolt.
Ukrainian authorities said that the assassination of Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov, and Ukrainian intelligence chief Vasyl Malyuk would be carried out by missiles and drones.
The operation was organized by Russian intelligence officers (FSB), Maxim Mishustin, Dmytro Berlin and Alexei Korneev, the Guardian writes.
Their goal was to find someone from President Zelensky’s entourage to kill. From there, the plan was to kill Budanov and the other officials with a missile strike, a suicide drone, followed by a missile strike to destroy the drone evidence.
In intercepted conversations, Berlin refers to the missile attack targeting Budanov as “Big Bird” and the drone attack as “Little Bird.” “It’s a missile, a drone, a missile,” he was quoted as saying.
According to what happened, one of the Ukrainians who was arrested is a colonel, and even had a secret meeting with Korneev before 2022.
