Xanthi: The potential buyer of IX was the victim of wire fraud

Police investigations are still ongoing to uncover another online scam committed against a Greek resident of Xanthi, who wanted to buy an agricultural truck from an advertisement he saw on a social media site.

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, the victim contacted the man who published the advertisement and they agreed to proceed with purchasing the farm for a sum. 19,870 euros.

The potential buyer deposited the amount in installments into the bank accounts provided to him by the seller. However, the sale was not completed because he never received the truck, and as a result he filed a complaint for internet fraud with the Xanthi police, who are conducting a preliminary investigation to identify the as yet unknown perpetrator.

He bought a mobile phone and got useless materials

A 35-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman from Romania were the perpetrators of the scam that occurred last July against a 25-year-old man from Kalamata, who discovered a mobile phone sale ad on Facebook Marketplace and contacted the supposed sellers. They agreed to send him the mobile phone via courier and pay cash on delivery.

The 25-year-old paid the price when he received the package, but once he opened it, he found that it did not contain a mobile phone, but rather… useless parts. The fraud was discovered through a security investigation and a case was filed against the foreigners which was submitted to the Kalamata District Attorney.
