Few people know that Kit Kat is almost 100 years old, with its history beginning on August 29, 1935, when it was made by the British Rowntree Company. Today, Kit Kat is produced by Nestlé and is one of the world’s leading chocolate brands.
The famous slogan “Take a break, get a Kit Kat” was the brainchild of Donald Gillis of London advertising agency JWT and was first heard in 1958. Over the next 50 years, it became a true advertising slogan and is now copyrighted by the brand.
In a way, Kit Kat has become one of the favorite products that generations have grown up with. That’s why many were surprised to learn how Kit Kats are actually made.
Everyone assumes Kit Kat is made up of chips and chocolate, but an old BBC documentary that captured the production process inside a Nestlé factory is making the rounds online once again and leaving many in awe.
In an episode of the BBC series “Inside the Factory”, the show camera went inside the Nestlé factory in York, England, to show how Kit Kats were made.
The show shows an employee pulling damaged rods from the production line and dropping them into a large blue bucket. The host asks her, “What about all that stuff you’re throwing away?”
Then I explained to him that the broken bars are basically “recycled”, being used to fill the wafer.
This information left social media users stunned, as none of them imagined Kit Kat might fill it out.
The company confirmed that chocolate bars and wafers are mixed with other ingredients to make the pralines used between Kit Kat chips. The added advantage is that this recipe significantly reduces the material that ends up in landfill during the production of the product.
One social media user joked, “What was the original Kit Kat made of?”
Another said, “Now I’m in a never-ending circle trying to figure out who came first.”
Thirdly, he added, “It’s an episode of Kit Kat that never ends.”
