A group of investigators claim Zodiac’s identity was known to the FBI and accuse him of a cover-up
A team of independent investigators searching for the true identity of the “Zodiac” killer has claimed that the FBI has been “secretly listing” a suspect since 2016.
An FBI informant has confirmed that Air Force veteran Gary Francis Post is still listed as a suspect in FBI files, said Thomas Colbert, an investigative journalist and leader of the nonprofit volunteer group Case Breakers.
According to The Independent, the group of 40 former police officers, coroners, federal agents and private investigators has accused government agencies of mishandling the case. They claimed in 2021 that they had finally discovered the notorious dangerous killer and claimed it was Post.
The identity of the serial killer has been a source of much speculation for nearly half a century, ever since the killer terrorized California’s San Francisco Bay Area before disappearing without trace.
Did they know who he was?
Colbert said in a news release that the Air Force veteran has been listed “secretly” as a suspect in the case since 2016, with “partial DNA” stored at an FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.
“The perpetrator has been secretly listed as a ‘suspect’ by the name Zodiac on headquarters computers since 2016 – with ‘partial DNA’ safely stored at the feds’ lab in Quantico, Virginia,” the group said.
Post died in 2018, and the FBI has continued to dismiss the team’s reports and conclusions, saying as recently as October 2021 that the cold case remains open.
However, the group claimed to have linked Post to every Zodiac murder between 1968 and 1969.
They also claimed that there was a sixth Zodiac victim, identified as Cheri Jo Bates from 1966. But the FBI denied any connection to the serial killer.
The group said law enforcement ignored the evidence and accused it of mishandling the case.
“Like police officers, federal agents face an enormous workload, constant training requirements, and bizarre rules and red tape. But when someone wearing a badge or uniform works with others to withhold material, bypass difficult procedures, or lie about evidence, it harms our volunteers and the families who Answers await,” notes the team’s FBI informant.
Colbert said the families of the victims deserve an answer.
“Unfortunately, the team documented more than two dozen examples of unprofessional law enforcement in this area,” the statement said.
Since 1968-1969, at least five people have been killed by an unknown serial killer in the San Francisco Bay Area. The killer taunted the police with coded messages, calling himself “Zodiac”.
The murders have never been solved and have been the subject of numerous films and documentaries, including David Fincher’s 2007 Zodiac.
